Crocheting Needle Crafts by Danuta Kantorowska

The family of Danuta Kantorowska has been cultivating the tradition of needlework for generations. Her father’s relatives come from the vicinity of Łowicz and Skierniewice, known for living traditions of folk art and craft. In 1922 part of the family moved from the Łowicz region to Krajkowo in the municipality of Raciąż. Besides regular farm work, men would weave baskets and make brooms from birch and common broom. Women would spin sheep’s wool on the spinning wheel, knit, do needlework as well as embroider blouses and skirts. They also made runners from straps of old clothes, using weaving looms.
Hence, Ms. Kantorowska grew up surrounded by folk artists. She knitted her first scarf when she was 6 years old and, to this day, she still does needlework. In her free time she knits, crochets and embroiders using various techniques. She creates sweaters, mesh tunics, skirts, table cloths, runners, and Christmas and Easter decorations.
Danuta Kantorowska is a member of the Regional Association of the Creators of Culture and National Heritage, which is based in Raciąż. She exhibits her work at local events and at the yearly Raciąż Fair. Her craft can also be admired at the National Ethnography Museum in Warsaw and the Mazovian Village Museum in Sierpc.

As it is with her other creations, Ms. Kantorowska exhibits her work at local events and at the yearly Raciąż Fair. Her craft can also be admired at the National Ethnography Museum in Warsaw and the Mazovian Village Museum in Sierpc.
