The Mystery of Lord’s Passion in Czerwińsk by the Vistula River

One of the most renowned Polish Passion Plays is the Mystery of Lord’s Passion that takes place at the Salesian monastery in Czerwińsk by the Vistula river. The author of the play is a Salesian, father Franciszek Harazin, PhD (1885-1941) and the music was written by another
Salesian, and a famous composer of mainly church tunes, father Antoni Hlond, PhD (1884-1963).

The formula for this Passion Play changes each year, so that the message can have a deeper effect on audiences’ hearts. Such modifications include the introduction of historical instruments mentioned in the Bible in the musical performances, as well as the staging of a
more naturalistic, based on folk passions, depiction of Christ’s Passion by the theatrical performers. In order to see the Passion, crowds of pilgrims reaching thousands over one weekend, arrive from all over Poland in Czerwińsk by the Vistula river during Lent. A trip to Czerwińsk is not
only an excellent opportunity for a mini retreat, but also a chance to visit the XIIth century basilica and monastery, as well as a renovated Salesian overseas missions exposition and a newly opened museum of Cardinal August Hlond, Primate of Poland.
The Mystery of Lord’s Passion is presented on Saturdays and Sundays during Lent.
